XL Axiata, a major telecommunications company, wanted to provide a leadership programme for university students to support them become future leaders and contribute towards improved social and economic outcomes across the nation. Since 2013 close to 400 young people have engaged with the programme and have contributed to the learning and development of hundreds of people through youth-led community initiatives. In addition, an e-curriculum programme is available for students in more remote regions. They are able to self-manage their learning through a one year on-line course. In 2013 the programme won best education CSR programme at the Jakarta Journalists awards. In 2014 it was a finalist in the education and literacy section of the Global CSR Summit awards. The student feedback from the programme speaks for itself “The part of the programme that helped me the most is the personal mentoring. It gives me feedback on my performance and by that I can learn by myself as well.” “It’s challenging because we have to develop a real community project. So I think it helps us prepare for the real world.” “I was really interested in each class as I always expected something new – and it happened!” “Compared to my usual in class learning, I believe XL Future Leaders class learning let me to unleash my potential to 100%…” An evaluation after two years of the programme showed that:

– 94% of students felt the programme meet their needs as a developing leader.
– 93% of students felt their community project provided an authentic opportunity to demonstrate the skills they had learnt.
– 100% of students felt facilitator feedback supported them to understand their own strengths and next steps.
