Enhancing Education Outcomes in Challenging Contexts

Helping to reduce global poverty and increase life chances is everyone’s concern. At Cognition Education we’re committed to doing our part because we know that better education = better everything.

Cognition International Development works with ministries of education and funders in complex, remote and challenging contexts. We do this to address important problems and to build sustainable local capacity.

We have a long history of delivering education improvement programmes in the Pacific Islands and Asia – for contexts as diverse as Afghanistan, Indonesia, Malaysia, the Solomon Islands, Cook Islands, Tonga and Nauru.  Our clients include the New Zealand Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade (MFAT), the Australian Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT) and local corporate funders.

Through this important work we support local communities to achieve the UN 2030 Sustainable Development Goal of inclusive, equitable and quality education for all.

Some of our recent projects include:

  • MFAT Pacific Leadership and Pacific Literacy development

Designing an enhanced school leadership for improved literacy outcomes in Solomon Islands, the Cook Islands and Tonga.

  • MFAT and Nauru Ministry of Education – junior secondary schooling reform

Review of initial and in-service teacher education; support for students with special learning needs.

  • DFAT and the Solomon Islands Ministry of Education and Human Resources

National curriculum review and redevelopment, including co-construction of teaching and learning resources; review of the impact of culture on educator attitudes to teacher guidelines.

  • XL Future Leaders

Working in partnership with XL Indonesia, a major telecommunications company, to develop leadership, community development and entrepreneurial skills in hundreds of tertiary students from across Indonesia.

Our approach

Cognition’s approach to this work is culturally sensitive: we respect, embrace and support the cultures and voices of the communities we work with.   For us, it’s all about the partnership. We are driven by helping our clients to take ownership and we always leave behind enhanced capacity and co-constructed tools and methodologies to support local communities to really grow.
